Morris College Gains Momentum in 2027 U.S. News Best Colleges Rankings
SUMTER, S.C. — Morris College is gaining momentum in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, climbing 10 positions to rank among the top 100 Regional Colleges South. The gains place Morris at No. 74 (tie), making it one of only seven HBCUs in the category’s top 100. Morris also climbed to No. 35 among Top Performers on Social Mobility, another encouraging sign of progress as the College pursues its vision for the future. The social mobility ranking is particularly meaningful for Morris, an institution founded in 1908 to expand educational opportunity for African Americans and grounded in a continuing mission of intellectual preparation, Christian character and service.
“We are encouraged by the progress, while recognizing that there is more work ahead,” said Morris College President Dr. Said Sewell. “Moving up 10 positions is a positive indication that Morris is gaining momentum. Our focus is on building upon that progress by strengthening the student experience, improving outcomes and preparing our graduates to make meaningful contributions in their professions and communities.”
Building Momentum
The rankings come as Morris College advances The Morris Movement, the College’s vision for the future, focused on:
Mobilizing who Morris is
Modernizing the resources and support it needs,
Modernizing how the institution operates, and
demonstrating Mastering through measurable outcomes and impact on students and communities.
“This is not about chasing a ranking,” Sewell added. “It is about moving Morris forward. Rankings provide one measure of our progress, but our larger measure will always be what happens to our students: what they learn, how they succeed and how they serve after they leave us.”
