Response to Students’ Concerns About Living Conditions at Morris College

Morris College is currently operating two female residence halls, Adams-Daniels-McLesterSanders (ADMS) and Anna Reuben, Maimie Coker, Magnolia Lewis, Alberta Simmons (AMMA), and two male residence halls, Rich, Cureton, Johnson (RCJ) and AlexanderGraham (A-G) on its campus. Over the years, these sound structures, built between 1984 and 2013, have provided quality living spaces for students who desire to live on campus for the full living-learning experience. These facilities are Wi-Fi accessible, cable-ready- provided by Spectrum U, equipped with contemporary digital washers/dryers, with computer labs on each floor to support student learning and academic success.

We currently have a total of 242 boarding students, and there are no “unlivable conditions” in any residence hall on campus as we are cognizant of the nexus between safe, secure, and healthy living spaces and learning and academic achievement. There are, however, cosmetic improvements that are needed, especially in the bathrooms (i.e., painting, tile replacement, improved lighting, intense cleaning, and others). Outside of daily cleaning, these issues are best handled when students are out during the Christmas, Spring, and Summer Breaks.

Students may periodically see mildew in their rooms or the bathrooms. The College has trained and certified maintenance staff in effective mildew remediation. Consequently, there is no MOLD in any residence hall on campus, and reported cases of mildew in residence hall rooms are immediately addressed.

The residential life staff remains committed and makes every effort daily to promptly address items that need attention in the residence halls. Students are always encouraged to report problems in their rooms, the bathrooms, or any place else on campus they see needing attention. The proper channel to report issues in the residence halls is to the residence hall director, who will complete a Maintenance Action Report to be submitted to the director of residential life. The students’ immediate concerns raised in the media are currently being addressed.
