Morris College Held its 2021 Honors Day Convocation

March 24, 2021

Morris College held its Spring 2021 Honors Day Convocation on March 25, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. in the Neal-Jones Auditorium. Traditionally, Morris College's Honors Day Convocation included an in-person ceremony where honorees and their family along with campus faculty, staff, and students could gather and celebrate the occasion. However, due to Morris College adhering to the state’s COVID-19 protocols, only the guest speaker, Dr. Henry Darby ‘75, North Charleston High School Principal; platform participants; and honorees were allowed to be present during the ceremony to allow for social distancing. The rest of the Morris College family were able to view the ceremony live on Morris' Facebook. For those that missed the event, you are able to view the recorded session by going to Morris’ Facebook as well as you can download a copy of the Spring 2021 Honors Day Convocation program here.

To be included in Morris’ Spring 2021 Honors Day Convocation, students had to have received a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher during the Fall 2021 semester. At Morris, we take pride in helping to create a family atmosphere where students can reach their highest potential. Honors Day Convocation is an opportunity to celebrate those achievements. “These students not only surpassed our expectations but were able to achieve good grades under external stresses and pressures caused by COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Jacob Butler, Jr., Interim Academic Dean. These are our “pandemic honorees” students who will always be able to say, “I achieved academic honors during a time when there was so much uncertainty going on around the world,” continued Butler.

Dr. Henry Darby is a North Charleston native and Morris College alumni who have educated and enhanced the lives of children for over forty years as well as he recently received the Order of the Palmetto-South Carolina’s highest civilian honor for his passion in giving back. “Thoughts are very powerful. Think positively despite the dismal and dark things,” said Dr. Darby. “Continue thinking positivity,” because “in this life as troubles will surely arise you have to be of good cheer,” because when you do get sick from the palsy of major and persistent problems and unsurmountable obstacles” you have to continue moving forward and “learn to help and serve others,” continued Dr. Darby.

For the honorees that were not present, you may pick up your awards in the academic dean’s office.
