In celebration of Women's History Month, we would like to recognize Hattie Douglas Hughes. Mrs. Hughes was arrested in 1961 during her junior year of study at Morris College for her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in Sumter County.
She graduated from Morris College in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was an educator for many years. In 2014, Morris College conferred upon Mrs. Hughes an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for her civil rights activism.
