Letter to the Class of 2020

March 31, 2020

TO:                            All Prospective May 2020 Graduating Seniors

FROM:                      Dr. Jacob E. Butler, Jr.

                                  Interim Academic Dean

SUBJECT:                Information on Changes in Academic Activities

For Spring Semester Due to Coronavirus Situation

DATE:                      March 27, 2020

As you are aware, Morris College and other institutions of higher education have had to suspend face-to-face instruction and other campus-based activities for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency. Because our senior-level students are especially affected by this situation, you are hereby advised of the following:

  • The Commencement exercises scheduled for May 2, 2020 are postponed until a later date. Also, the Senior Class Night program has been canceled. You will receive additional communication regarding decisions on any other matters related to ceremonial activities for seniors at a later date once the public health emergency has passed.
  • Seniors who complete their degree requirements this semester will still receive their Certification of Completion letters shortly after the end of this term. Once certified, your final transcripts will also reflect the May 2020 completion date. This provides the documentation that will allow you to go forward with pursuing employment opportunities or enrollment in graduate/professional school as a college degree completer.
  • The Senior Exit Examination and the Senior Capstone Oral Presentations are both canceled due to the Coronavirus situation, and will not be factored into final grades for seniors. Students should consult with their individual Capstone instructors for information about how other aspects of the Capstone course will be handled.

  • Seniors completing required Internship courses in their respective major programs should consult the Morris College Learning Management System (LMS) to receive guidance from their professor as to how the required work hours provision for the course will be modified due to the current public health emergency.
  • Seniors and all other students should consult the LMS, the Morris College website and other official information sources of the college to obtain updates as may be required due to changing circumstances.
  • It is important that you complete all remaining requirements (both academic and financial) to be certified as a Morris College graduate this semester. If you do not do so, you cannot be certified as a May 2020 degree completer, no matter what the reason may be for your failure to satisfy all of your requirements. For academic matters, contact your individual class professors, your Division Chair or the Academic Dean’s office regarding any problems or concerns. (Please follow that chain of contact.) For financial matters, please contact the college’s Business Office or the Financial Aid Office.

We wish you and your loved ones all the best in this stressful time, and encourage each of you to take public health information and instructions seriously.

Be safe.
