Dr. Henry Darby, 1975 Morris College Alumnus Receives Order of the Palmetto

February 22, 2021

Dr. Henry Darby, 1975 Morris College alumni, Charleston County Councilman, and Walmart Associate at Walmart in North Charleston, South Carolina - lives up to the Morris College mission statement – to produce graduates who can pursue useful and productive careers and in so doing enhance their own lives and the society in which they take their places.”

On February 9, 2021, Dr. Darby received South Carolina’s highest civilian honor - Order of the Palmetto. This honor is due to Dr. Darby’s passion in giving back. In keeping with Morris College’s mission statement, Dr. Darby pursued a “useful and productive career” as a life-long beloved educator, “taking his place” in teaching children in the Charleston, South Carolina school system. For over 40 years, Dr. Darby used his God gifted talents to passionately educate and enhance the lives of children - making every student feel they could learn and excel! This passion also resulted in selfless personal sacrifices - taking on a second job as a nightly Walmart shelve stocker; donating all of his Walmart wages to help students in need. When Darby’s acts of kindness spread throughout the community, the retail giant (Walmart), inspired by Darby’s commitment and dedication to his students awarded him $50,000 to help his noble cause. While Darby is getting a lot of national attention for his acts of kindness and his civilian honor, the Morris College family would like to take this time to salute and congratulate Dr. Darby -- a man of great humility with a servant’s heart!

Dr. Darby currently ‘takes his place’ as a Principal at North Charleston High School; however, Dr. Darby’s impact is far reaching, taking its place in and beyond the boundaries of South Carolina and as importantly, within the hearts of mankind.

Darby is not only a graduate of Morris College, but he also holds a Master of Arts degree from Atlanta University (1985) and a Master of Education (2007) and an Education Specialist degree (2011) from the Citadel as well as he has studied further at Emory University.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matt 5:5
