SUMTER, S.C. — Morris College is proud to announce that ROTC Cadet DeKendrick G. Summerson, a senior from Mullins, S.C., will be commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Quartermaster Corps of the Army National Guard on Friday, December 6 at 1 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the O.R. Reuben Chapel on the Morris College campus.
Cadet Summerson completed the Leadership Development Assessment course at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Wash. in August of 2012. During his time at Lewis-McChord he served in several leadership roles as a cadet: platoon leader, squad leader and quick reaction force commander.
Summerson enrolled in Morris College in August 2010. He has been very active at the college, serving as color guard commander of ROTC, a liaison between University of South Carolina and the Morris College ROTC programs, senior cadet, cadet counselor, president of Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society and vice-president of Iota Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is expected to graduate with honors in May 2014 with a degree in business administration. When asked what brought him to Morris College, Summerson said, “the ROTC program and the college’s affordability.”
The Morris College ROTC program began in 1985 as a joint enrollment agreement with the University of South Carolina. Summerson will be the 52nd officer to be commissioned in the program.
